They need a WHY..

Amazing first days in Tokyo – full of impressions and new interesting meetings – I will share my experience little by little…

In this never ending city the mind feels never ending too in a way…

Even though I knew it – it’s fascinating to see skyscrapers to the horizon in all directions …! Breathtaking. But not the only thing being breathtaking here. There is SO much potential in this country – not taken care of. There are so many highly educated women, leaving work when they get kids – and at the same time so many extremely hard working men.

Both seem to need a WHY.

It was an amazing feeling lecturing here in Tokyo yesterday at the seminar “Life Puzzle – how to combine family and working life more equally”, arranged by the Embassy of Sweden and the Swedish Institute. Talking about the concept ParentSmart Companies and how it can be a way to change attitudes in companies, I could more than ever feel the positive curiosity and see the smiles of hope in the audience. And in the panel discussion that followed I became even more convinced that the ParentSmart mindset can have an impact in the important attitude work taking place here in Japan right now, together with the structural system built for child care etc.

ParentSmart ideas (parenthood = one of the best management courses you can get) give the important answer to the question WHY concerning prioritised questions in Japan right now. It gives both women and men an answer in dialogue with their manager/company discussing:

WHY women should go back to work – strong and confident and developed – after having a baby.
WHY men should work less and spend valuable time home with their kids – without feeling bad towards colleagues and getting negative reactions from them.

I believe that the best starting point to change attitudes – also in Japan – is to identify and spread ParentSmart role models (companies and leaders). Interesting meetings and interviews followed today and ideas are developed quickly here now to see HOW… 🙂
